First of all, you would be surprised at how easy it is to get away with not eating anything in front of people - it's a matter of telling them that you've already eaten, or you'll get something in a minute, or you're too excited or worked up to eat anything just yet, and they'll generally leave you be.

As for the cake, I've got horrible allergies.
