When'd you decide that? I mean, I can't remember a time when you didn't go on about being a detective, but when did you decide it was a great idea to sink a bunch of money into it?
[Hey look, he's not calling detectives useless today. It really is a weird day.]
Well, I've always admired them for the reasons anyone else might; they're smart and clever, but they don't lose that human feel to them despite being seemingly out of touch, beyond our reach. Even Holmes had his vices! But they're well-liked and sought after to solve things that stump those otherwise, and always bring the right person to justice, even if that justice lies in allowing the supposed culprit escape.
[They're not black and white, essentially. They're very much human and can make mistakes too, but no one dislikes them just because they make one.]
There's another reason I'd like to become one, though, even if it may remain a... a hobby, I guess, [which he is obviously loathe to call it,] but it's more personal.
...I wasn't given up or orphaned. I got lost when I was younger.
[It's not the whole truth, but he doesn't seem particularly inclined to elaborate further. No one ever believed him when he told the whole truth anyway.]
I'm still holding out hope on finding my parents someday, even if it's probably impossible.
[... This is definitely not something he's told anyone, but Silver revealed something like that about himself and... really, he feels an odd sort of kinship, even if he's hesitating to continue.
He ends up watching Aoi instead, wondering if he could pet the odd creature.]
It's not... quite the same, I feel, but... The other reason is to find out who my father is. I've never met him, but I want to know who he is, what made my mom like him in the first place.
[Why he left them, what made him look at his mother and just... decide not to deal with it.]
It's a selfish reason to become a detective, but it's what's been the driving me beyond anything else.
[...For the first time, he actually feels like he understands Goro. That's a way of thinking he can wrap his head around a lot better than the mystery and justice.]
It's a selfish reason, but it's more honest.
[Silver gives him a gentle punch in the shoulder.]
You're gonna have to get better at decking people. If your dad turns out to be a jerk, you need to get him right in the face.
[Oh-- oh, that's a friendly punch, okay. There's such an unusual amount of relief he's feeling too, a bond growing stronger with Silver, and his smile's small and sincere.]
Is that why you pick fights so often, Silver? Just in case yours turns out that way too?
[But the sigh's kind of affectionate sounding? Yeah, it is.]
Well! Well, your secret is safe with me, and my personal reasons are safe with you. [...] I can help you look for them, if you'd like. While I'm looking into my own.
[Even if he can maybe find Silver's parents easier, considering he is Almost Positive that his own father is back in Japan.]
[Time to go do something insanely irresponsible so he can decompress from all of this. What the fuck is he going to tell Elda? why did he tell Goro any of that? It didn't turn out poorly, but-]

now in the right spot
[But he only pauses for a beat, rubbing his arm.]
I think I would have gone anyway, though. There's many different viewpoints offered in higher education, and I value that.

[You know, Goro's probably answered this plenty of times, but this is the first time that Silver actually seems interested in the answer.]

[Inspiring his detective spirit, as it was.]
...I did not mean to pick the smiley icon, whoops
[Maybe saying he's never been passionate about anything is a bit of a stretch, but... It gets the point across well enough, anyway.]
too bad he's Thrilled now

What's the personal reason?
[...He's not just gonna give it up for that, Silver, come on-]
I'll share a secret with you for it.

[Now that he's asserted himself, how exactly does he want to go about this?]
I just grew out of the foster system. That part's not much of a secret.
[Although he tries not to talk about it much. He's hesitant to follow down this line of conversation, so he pauses to see if Goro's following.]
no subject
[So. He'll nod, go on. What's your secret, pal.]
no subject
[It's not the whole truth, but he doesn't seem particularly inclined to elaborate further. No one ever believed him when he told the whole truth anyway.]
I'm still holding out hope on finding my parents someday, even if it's probably impossible.
no subject
Why?
[It's a question startled out of him and it's rude, but. Silver is Silver. Goro's fine with being rude to him.]
no subject
[It's not said mockingly, at least. He'd just rather beat around the bush than explain himself.]
no subject
In truth, it's probably the same as mine.
[... This is definitely not something he's told anyone, but Silver revealed something like that about himself and... really, he feels an odd sort of kinship, even if he's hesitating to continue.

[He's just joking.]
no subject
[He looks pretty pleased, despite himself.]
That's not the reason, though. I just like picking fights.
[Being a delinquent shithead is his core brand proposition, okay.]

[...Well, that's an interesting tidbit of information.]
That's also a secret, of course.

[... This is where they split, right. Sure. Yeah.
He looks like he wants to say something else, then shakes his head.]
Let me know how your business turns out.
